Dear
On behalf of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Center for Cancer Research Fellows and Young Investigators Committee (CCR-FYI), we invite you to participate in our 9thAnnual Fellow’s Colloquium as a speaker for the workshop titled “Careers for the 21st Century”. The colloquium will be held March 18-20, 2009 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
The annual CCR-FYI Colloquium (http://ccr.nci.nih.gov/careers/fellows), implemented in 2001, has been one of the most ambitious programs implemented by the CCR-FYI committee and has since become a long-standing component in the training program for more than 1000 current NCI postdoctoral intramural scientists. Last year, more than 400 fellows attended the colloquium. This event is fully supported by the CCR leadership, the CCR director, Dr. Robert Wiltrout, and by the NCI director, Dr. John Niederhuber. The goals for the CCR-FYI retreat are to provide an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to present their work to their peers, to allow young scientists a chance to explore potential career paths and to provide a forum to learn about exciting, groundbreaking research occurring at the NCI/NIH and at other institutions.
This year we are embarking on a new endeavor that highlights Careers for the 21st Century. As you may know, the ability of scientists to obtain a job following their postdoctoral training is critical for a successful career. However early-career scientists are finding it increasingly more challenging to find jobs that follows the conventional science career path. More and more early-career scientists are interested in investigating career options outside of these customary career tracks. This workshop will highlight exciting career options for those seeking them. Please consider our offer to be a speaker at this workshop and should you accept, travel expenses, per diem, and a small honorarium will be provided.
We hope that your demanding schedule will permit you to attend and I look forward to your positive response. Please do not hesitate to contact me at caseyorl@mail.nih.gov or at (301) 443-2879 should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Orla Casey Ph.D.
