Intramural Staff Scientists and Staff Clinicians (SS/SC) at NCI live in an era of diminished resources because of constrained funding and simultaneous cost escalation. To better meet our mission of diminishing the pain and suffering of cancer, we need to increase available research funding so that we can use our scientific creativity to the fullest.

Science flourishes only when there exists sufficient time and resources to carefully contemplate, plan, and implement the next critical experiment. If we are to fully realize our potential, we need to seek avenues of support from the broader extramural biomedical research community. The SS/SC association needs to fully cooperate with the national and international community of science.

I believe the SS/SC Association can be a positive force for change at NCI and NIH. I see the major task of intramural scientists at NIH in the next few years as reaching out to colleagues in academia and industry in order to build fruitful collaborations. In order to facilitate this critical task, the SS/SC should work together with the Assembly of Scientists and other like-minded intramural organizations to clarify the rules for collaboration and for extramural funding. Collaborating with the larger extramural scientific community can greatly strengthen our ability to meet our mission.
