Section 508

What Is Section 508?

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. 794d) requires federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.

Section 508 requires that all Web site content be equally accessible to people with disabilities. This applies to Web applications, Web pages and all attached files. It applies to intranet as well as public-facing Web pages.

Accessibility Accommodation

An accommodation is a means or method outside of Section 508 standards designed to assist users with disabilities in cases where the application of current Section 508 standards is neither feasible nor helpful.

HHS allows the use of an accessibility accommodation (with approval) where the application of current Section 508 standards is not feasible, not helpful and/or not practical. ALL accommodation requests must be submitted, reviewed and approved at the CCR, NCI, NIH, and HHS levels.
