Overview:

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is  technique used to detect proteins (antigens) in tissue and cytology samples. The procedure involves the use of prepared antibodies which attach to the antigen in question on the sample, and various types of detection systems that then provide the means to visualize the antigen. IHC is an ancillary technique routinely used in the work up of tissue pathology and cytology samples for the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of cancer patients. In addition, the method also provides the pathologist with information regarding identification of infectious organisms as well as differentiating malignant from benign processes.
